Designed by Colonel Christopher Gasden of South Carolina, this flag was used in 1775 on ships attempting to prevent the British from re-supplying their troops. The snake symbol with its 13 rattles representing the 13 Colonies was widely during the Revolutionary War and the motto Dont Tread on Me was a defiant warning to the British. The Gadsden is considered one of this country's first flags and continues to be popular today.

Culpeper Minutemen Flag
First Navy Jack
This flag was carried by the Culpeper Minutemen, a Virginia militia formed in January 1775. This unit drove the British fleet from Hampton, Virginia in October 1775 and fought in the Battle of Great Bridge (near Chesapeake, VA) in December 1775, which effectively ended the British governance of Virginia. Although the group was dis-banded in January 1776, a year after its founding, its spirit lives on in this distinctive popular flag.
The First Navy Jack first appeared on ships of the Continental Navy in 1775 under the command of Commodore Esek Hopkins. In 2002 the Secretary of the Navy directed that this flag be flown on all U.S. Navy vessels during the Global War on Terrorism as "an historic reminder of the nation's and Navy's origin and will to persevere and triumph."
