The Blue Star Service Banner is usualy displayed in a window to indicate that a family member is on active duty in the U.S. military. Two, three, etc. stars signify two, three, etc. persons serving. The banner was designed in 1917 by Army Captain Robert L. Queissner of the Fifth Ohio Infantry, in honor of his two sons who were serving in World War I. The banner was widely used during WW I and WW II and has again become popular in recent years.
A Gold Star Service Banner commemorates a family member who has died during military service.
